The past 50 years have brought enormous changes to couples relationships and marriages. Couples counseling has also come a long way during that same time. We use evidenced-based counseling methods to help Tallahassee area couples strengthen their relationships in all different life phases. Some myths about relationships and marriage:
Myth: Being in a committed relationship should be naturally easy. Truth: Relationships take work. Having two independent people share their lives together is not easy. It's hard. Differences are inevitable. Yet these challenges can be accommodated so that couples can enjoy their experiences together to the fullest.
Myth: Couples who can't solve conflicts will fail in their relationship. Truth: Conflict resolution is an important part of any relationship, but all conflicts don't need to be solved. The Gottman Institute has found that about two-thirds of all couples' conflicts will never be solved, and many happy couples work around these differences through coping and dialogue.
Myth: Affairs cause divorce. Truth: Infidelity can be one of the biggest breaches of trust in a relationship. Studies indicate about 15% of women and 25% of men will have an affair during their committed relationship. However extra-relationship affairs can be more of a symptom than a cause. The California Divorce Mediation Project found that the main cause for affairs is that couples become emotionally distant and drift apart. In short: emotional loneliness in the midst of a strained relationship.
